The New Security Rules--And Beware Northwest

1. Yes, there are now added restrictions to what we can take onboard. Thursday the travel world turned topsy-turvy once again following the United Kingdom's Intelligence Agency uncovering a plot that could have turned out horrific. I have flown twice (ex-Newark and Los Angeles) since the new rules came into place, and got though security in less than 10 minutes on both occasions! Want more details about what is and is not permissible? Check out this link.

2. Northwest is still in the news as it attempts to emerge from bankruptcy. Problem is that it has failed (again) to come to an agreed contract with it's flight attendants, who have threatened to strike later this month. While we await the bankruptcy judge's verdict whether a strike is legal or not, consider that airlines staff have another potent weapon at their disposal--CHAOS. This tool involves sporadic flight crews calling in sick--and randomly disrupting flight schedules. My advice--avoid booking Northwest any time soon. And if you already have a reserved Northwest reservation, monitor the news carefully over the next two weeks. If you have a bundle of Northwest frequent flyer miles--redeem them on a partner airline. A strike could spell the end of Northwest--liquidation would then be a real possibility.
