Beware New Policies That Expire Your Miles Much Faster
We're well into 2007, and much has happened on the travel front. Here are the major developments so far:
1. US Airways started the process of expiring frequent flyer miles 18 months after any account has not had registered any activity (usually meaning a deposit). Other airlines are matching this egregious practice, trying to reduce the airlines' liability to those customers who have earned their miles whether by flying, credit card or whatever. This means you now have to monitor your frequent flyer accounts more closely, and be sure to have a deposit at least once every eighteen months. Get details here, including an excellent table outlining every major US airline's current policies.

2. US Airways withdrew its offer to purchase Delta, after Delta's creditors rejected the acquisition offer in bankruptcy court (reason not given). For commentary on the future of mergers in the US, check this out: Mergershttp://www.travelexpert.com/mergers
3. In the latest edition of Luxury Escapes newsletter, I outline a new hotel program that will have you luxuriating in top-of-the-line hotels worldwide for 50% off the retail price--even during peak holiday months. Add flying international business class on any airline for under $1,000--or in first for just $1,200. It is rare that I come across such a simple and powerful strategy to save huge amounts of money on luxury. Interested? Check out 4.
